BOOK CLUB: Insider Without & Outsider Within (June 29 , 2020)

Unlikely Alliances from Appalachia to East L.A.

Patricia Hill Collins (1986) labels herself as an ‘outsider within’ due to her intersectional standpoint as a Black woman sociology professor in the ivory tower. In contrast to the ‘outsider within’ lens, Dr. Kim Case theorizes her own social location as an ‘insider without’ due to a complex matrix of identities within the classed academic cultural context. Similarly, Dr. Desdamona Rios critiques her positionality as a Latina academic negotiating the racial/ ethnic and power boundaries of the ivory tower.

Drs. Desdamona Rios and Kim Case- authors of this month's chapter- will facilitate this discussion

This is the first meeting for the SISC Book Club. Drs. Kim Case & Desdamona Rio, authors of the chapter 12 from Presumed Incompetent (2nd Edition) "Unlikely Alliances from Appalachia to East LA: Insider Without and Outsider Within" will lead our discussion.
