Preparing for Non- Academic Jobs (January 19, 2021)

Updated: Jan 4, 2021

How to describe and use your PhD skills and experience for the real world

Less than a third of those with doctoral degree in psychology end up working in an academic setting (e.g., faculty, instructor, adjunct). One reason for this shift has been new opportunities to apply doctorate level skills in the private sector. Also, there are fewer faculty and research positions available as institutions move toward contingent and research only faculty. Given this trend, it is crucial that graduate students start viewing themselves as emerging professionals. And the tools necessary for finding and preparing for these opportunities must be identified early.

This month the ASCP Working Group meeting will be led by two early career scholars that have been successfully negotiating this shift- Anna Kallschmidt and Alexander Snihur. They will share how to start preparing now for a career in the real world!

ASCP Working Group Professional Development

The ASCP Working Group prioritizes professional development as a key element of graduate training. Through the centering of social justice frameworks, these sessions strengthen our members capacity to engage in research, teaching and service addressing pressing social needs across diverse populations.

This virtual gathering will take place Tuesday January 19th from 10:00 to 11:00am. Participation information will be sent via email to all members of the ASCP Working Group. Please contact Dr. Dionne Stephens or Dr. Asia Eaton to receive event updates or webinar login information (see below).
