Students can submit an application for the Applied Social & Cultural Psychology certificate in Fall 2021.

The Florida International University (FIU) Department of Psychology's Graduate Certificate in Applied Social and Cultural Psychology (ASCP) is designed to offer doctoral level Psychology students an opportunity to learn culturally-humility centered frameworks and methods for research design when working with diverse populations. Through classes, students will explore research examining and influencing urgent social issues facing the global community (e.g., social mobility, health inequities, immigration). Students will also have opportunities to learn about how researchers build relationships with organizations at multiple levels, various modes for communicating research findings to stakeholders (including law makers, corporate boards, community leaders and activists, members of the non-profit sector, and the general public), and the relevance of social justice frameworks to research approaches.

  1. Gain an appreciation of the importance of cultural humility in community engagement and research partnerships, designs and procedures

  2. Become familiar with culturally-appropriate tools and methods for socio-cultural research and interventions

  3. Gain an understanding of community-partnered and participatory-action research for public benefit

  4. Be introduced to skills for communicate your research purpose, methods, and findings to multiple stakeholder audiences

  5. Provide a starting point through which students can pursue and strengthen their individual career interests relevant to social and cultural issues and change.

 Requirements

All students must also complete specific ASCP Certificate Portfolio requirements at least one semester prior to graduation. This portfolio will include:
 

  1. Diversity Statement
     

  2. One of the following written documents:

  • manuscript for publication that demonstrates their engagement in a community-based participatory action research project

  • Reflective Essay demonstrating Leadership Role in a community-based participatory action research project
     

   3. One of the following public engagement activities:

  • public workshop
  • white paper
  • policy brief
  • Op-Ed

* Additional public engagement activities may be approved on case by case basis

Admission Requirements*

  • Admission into the Department of Psychology Doctoral Program; non degree seeking students, terminal masters degree students, and doctoral outside the department are not eligible.

  • Online application to program & interview with two Core ASCP Faculty members; minimum of three semesters/ 1 year prior to graduation

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Beginning Fall 2021 students can apply for the certificate if they have at least 3 semesters/ 1 academic year remaining until their graduation

  • All course work and portfolio requirements must be completed one semester prior to graduation
