Book Club: Through a white woman's tears (Aug 25 , 2020)

Updated: Jan 4, 2021

Fragility, guilt, and the journey towards allyship

This SISC Book Club meeting will focus on Chapter 20 of Presumed Incompetent (2nd Edition). This gathering will be facilitated by working group member Eduardo De La Vega. In this month's reading we are examining Rachelle A.C. Joplin chapter discussing her journey as a White woman toward allyship with Women of Color. Using an honest and up front approach, she discusses how her deeply personal and painful- yet liberating- ongoing journey. Rachelle Joplin notes that to be allies, words and action must be in sync; words without actions are detrimental and work against changing the culture in academia

If you walk into a room, and there is no one that's not like you there, whether it's a woman or a person of color, anyone that's different from you, you should be able to say this is a problem. We need allies in that room to say that video, this room, this company, these ideas, this film, this whatever, this is not right - this is not good enough. ~Ava DuVernay
